Detroit is a city in Wayne County, Michigan. With a current estimated population of 681,090 it is the most populous city in the state of Michigan. When the city was incorporated in 1815, its proximity to the Great Lakes and the Canadian border made it a hub for shipping and transportation. In 1903 Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company in Detroit and was quickly followed by William Durant, the Dodge Brothers, Packard and Walter Chrysler. These automotive pioneers helped Detroit’s economy to grow exponentially and established the city as the automotive capital of the world. The first freeway was built in Detroit and a sprawling suburban area developed around the automotive plants. The automotive industry continued to reign supreme and Detroit enjoyed economic prosperity and a population boom throughout most of the 20th century. Beginning in the late 20th and early 21st centuries the automotive industry began to decline and residents began moving out of the city to suburban areas. The decline in the city’s main industry and the suburban flight has resulted in severe urban decay with several abandoned buildings and a government that cannot afford to provide municipal services. In 2013 Detroit declared bankruptcy with an $18.5 billion debt. The city is beginning to turn things around and the two major automotive plants, GM and Chrysler, began reporting a significant increase in profits. Other major employers in the city include Ally Financial and DTE Energy. Live music is a big part of Detroit’s nightlife scene as the city is the home of Motown. Many tourists are also attracted to the city’s many museums including the Detroit Institute of Arts and Motown Historical Museum. Detroit is also home to professional teams in the four major sports in the US including Detroit Pistons, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and Detroit Red Wings.

Crime rates in Detroit are high and in 2012 Forbes listed the city as the most dangerous city in the United States. Crime rates have been slowly decreasing over the past several years but the murder rate remains one of the highest in the nation. The chance of becoming a victim of crime in Detroit is 1 in 13 and residents are more likely to become victims of property crimes such as theft, burglary and vandalism. Poverty and long standing racial tensions are two contributing factors to the city’s high crime rate. In 2012 there were 15,968 reported cases of theft and 13,488 cases of burglary. Residents of Detroit can protect themselves from crimes like these by installing surveillance systems in their homes and businesses. Properties with surveillance systems experience less crime than those without.
