Greensboro is a city in Guilford County, North Carolina. It is the third largest city in the state with a population of 277,080. The city was established in 1808 as the new county seat and was planned around the central courthouse. Greensboro became a transportation hub and had many textile mills. By the end of the 19th century, the small textile mills had become large scale plants and Charlotte became the center of the Southern textile industry. Today Greensboro remains an important textile manufacturer as well as tobacco and furniture manufacturing. Many companies have their headquarters in the city such as Honda Aircraft Company, Lorillard Tobacco Company, the International Textile Group and the Atlantic Coast Conference. Greensboro garnered attention during the Civil Rights movement when four black students staged a sit-in at the segregated Woolworth’s lunch counter. Today the site is home to the International Civil Rights Center and Museum which attracts many visitors every year. Other popular attractions include the Blandwood Mansion and Gardens, the Greensboro Science Center and the amusement park Wet n’ Wild Emerald Pointe.
