Independence is a city in Jackson County, Missouri just outside of Kansas City. It is a large suburb with a current estimated population of 117,240. The city was founded in 1827 and named after the Declaration of Independence. It became an important frontier town as it was the starting point of the Santa Fe, Missouri and Oregon trails. In 1831 the Latter Day Saint movement came to the city with founder Joseph Smith, Jr. building a temple in Independence. The group was driven from the area during the 1838 Mormon War but returned later making the city the headquarters of three branches of the Latter Day Saint church. President Harry S. Truman grew up in Independence and served as a judge in the city. Today Independence is home to the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and both the President and his wife are buried in the city. Many museums and libraries in the city honor Independence’s history as a frontier town and as the home of a US President.

Crime rates in Independence are high, neighborhoods in the city center and along the border of Kansas City experience higher crime rates than those in the outlying areas. While the violent crime rate is about the same as the state average, the property crime rate is about twice as high as both the national and state averages. The chance of becoming a victim of property crime in Independence is 1 in 16. The most common property crimes are theft and burglary. In 2012 there were 5,116 reported cases of theft and 1,253 reported cases of burglary. These crimes can easily be deterred by installing surveillance systems in homes and businesses. Properties with surveillance systems are known to experience less crime than those without. Surveillance systems are endorsed by law enforcement and can help to lower crime rates overall.
