Baltimore is an independent city in Maryland. The current estimated population is 622,104 and it is the most populous city in the state. The Town of Baltimore was founded in 1729 and named for Maryland founder Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. The city played an important role in the American Revolution with the Second Continental Congress meeting in the Henry Fite House in Baltimore. During the War of 1812, the British attempted to capture the Port of Baltimore but United States troops were able to defend the city from Fort McHenry. During this battle the Star-Spangled Banner was written and later became the national anthem. When the railroad was established in Baltimore after the war, the city became a major shipping and manufacturing hub. The Industrial Revolution transformed the city into an industrial town processing steel and auto manufacturing. Today manufacturing remains a part of the city’s economy with products including rye whiskey, straw hats and refining crude oil. Baltimore relies largely on a service economy and the city’s unemployment rate is higher than the national average. The largest employer in the city is John Hopkins Hospital. John Hopkins University is one of the most prestigious universities in the country and draws many students to Baltimore. Tourism contributes an estimated $5 billion to Baltimore’s economy every year. The National Aquarium is the top tourist destination in the city. Other popular attractions include Fort McHenry, Mount Vernon and Oriole Park, home to the MLB team Baltimore Orioles.

Baltimore is one of the top ten most dangerous cities in the country. After experiencing a decline in crime in 2011, crime rates rose again in 2013. Baltimore’s high crime rates gained national attention when the controversial “Stop Snitchin’” campaign was brought to light along with the airing of the crime drama The Wire. The chance of becoming a victim of crime in the city is 1 in 15. Violent crime rates are more than three times higher than the national and state averages. Property crime is about twice as high. The chance of becoming a victim of violent crime is 1 in 70 and of property crime is 1 in 20. The most commonly reported crimes in the city are theft and burglary. In 2012 there were 17,397 reported cases of theft and 7,770 cases of burglary. Residents of Baltimore can protect themselves from crime by installing surveillance systems on their property. Surveillance systems are known to deter crime and can help to reduce crime rates overall.
