Alabama is a state in the southern United States. The current estimated population is 4,849,377. The first European settlement in what is now Alabama was by the French in 1702. The area remained under French control until 1763. After the Seven Years’ War the territory came under British control until the American Revolutionary War when the territory was divided between US and Spanish control. It wasn’t until 1813 that Alabama was under sole US control. Alabama was admitted to the Union in 1819 as the 22nd state. Settlers flooded into the new state to take advantage of the fertile land for cotton cultivation. The economy was built on large cotton plantations and slave labor. Alabama seceded from the Union in 1861 and joined the Confederate States of America. The Civil War ended in 1865 but Alabama was not officially restored to the Union until 1868. Alabama’s economy suffered after the war due to its dependence on agriculture and slave labor. Jim Crow laws were passed that segregated and disenfranchised African-Americans in the state and across the South. Many people moved out of the rural communities and into large cities to take advantage of the new industrial jobs that were being created during the Industrial Revolution. Manufacturing became a dominant industry in Alabama during the early 20th century and helped to get the state’s economy back on its feet. Many important events happened in Alabama during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The Freedom Rides, Selma to Montgomery marches and the Montgomery Bus Boycott all gained national attention and were important events in the Civil Rights movement that led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Alabama’s economy continued to diversify throughout the 20th century and today some of the dominant industries in the state are agriculture, finance, technology and education. Military also has a large presence in the state and the two largest employers in the state are Redstone Arsenal and Maxwell Air Force Base.
