Albuquerque was founded in 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost. It was named after a town in Spain. Albuquerque was originally used as a military outpost but a small farming community built up around the post. When the region came under US control in 1848, the Americans also maintained a military post in the city. A small battle was fought between Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War in Albuquerque, known as the Battle of Albuquerque. The railroad reached the town in 1880 bringing many new settlers to the area and creating an economic boom. Albuquerque was officially incorporated as a city in 1891. Route 66 was built through the city in 1926 and Albuquerque transformed into a commercial and tourist hub with many hotels, restaurants and gift shops. During World War II many Air Force bases and research laboratories were built in and around Albuquerque making it a center for the military industry and the building of the atomic bomb. Kirtland Air Force Base remains the top employer in the city today and many other government and technology companies maintain facilities in Albuquerque. The University of New Mexico is also a large employer for the city and its School of Medicine was ranked as one of the top 50 graduate schools in the country by US New and World Report in 2008. There are many art museums and galleries in and around the campus. A popular attraction in Albuquerque is the Sandia Peak Tramway which is the second longest aerial tramway in the world. The city received a boost in tourism due to the popular show Breaking Bad being set in Albuquerque.
