Biloxi is a city on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Biloxi was founded as part of French Louisiana in 1699. The land was ceded to Great Britain in 1763 after France’s defeat in the Seven Years’ War. Biloxi then came under United States control after the American Revolution. The city was incorporated in 1838 and became a summer resort town. Many hotels and summer homes were built. The Biloxi Lighthouse was completed in 1848 and has become a fixture of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Seafood factories and canneries opened in the city after the Civil War helping Biloxi’s economy and population to grow. Keesler Air Force Base and beach resorts also played an important role in Biloxi’s post war economy. Biloxi gained national attention during the Civil Rights Era when African-Americans protested the segregation of the Biloxi Beaches. During the protests a race riot broke out killing many people. The Biloxi beaches were ultimately desegregated. Gambling was legalized in the 1990s, transforming Biloxi into a center for casinos as well as resorts. Biloxi was badly affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and many buildings were destroyed. Many of the casinos and businesses along the coast have since reopened.

Biloxi has an above average crime rate. The chance of becoming a victim of crime in the city is 1 in 18. It is not unusual to see high crime rates in resort towns and gambling institutions. Violent crime rates are not much higher than the national average but property crime rates are much higher. The chance of becoming a victim of a crime such as theft, burglary or vandalism is 1 in 19. In 2013 there were 1,482 reported cases of theft and 703 cases of burglary. Many of the casinos and resorts in Biloxi employ the use of surveillance cameras to protect their businesses from theft or worse. Local residents can also benefit from the use of surveillance systems. Properties with surveillance systems are known to experience less crime than those without and they can help to lower crime rates overall. Surveillance systems can be used in private residences, offices, retail stores and many other locations.
