Colorado is a state in the Western United States. The current estimated population is 5,355,866. The US gained control of the territory that is now known as Colorado in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. About half of modern day Colorado remained under Spanish, and later Mexican, control until the end of the Mexican-American war in 1846. The area remained unorganized territory for many years and was visited mostly by gold seekers. In 1861 the Territory of Colorado was created. Gold and silver prospectors continued to settle in the area and build roads and towns. The railroad began to reach the Colorado Territory in 1869, bringing more settlers. Colorado was admitted as the 38th state in 1876. The mining industry took a blow with the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893 and the state continued to suffer through the Great Depression in the 1930s. Tourism and technology reinvigorated the state’s economy and today Colorado is considered to be one of the best states for business. Mining and agriculture remain mainstays of the economy with other notable industries in the state being technology, research, government and food processing. Natural resources are abundant in Colorado and many tourists are attracted to the beautiful landscape.
