Connecticut is a state in the New England region of the United States. The current estimated population is 3,596,677 making it one of the most densely populated states in the country. Dutch explorers were the first Europeans in Connecticut. Dutch fur traders established a fort in the area of present day Hartford in 1614. In 1635 the British commissioned John Winthrop to establish a colony at Old Saybrook. Several other colonies sprung up in surrounding areas and they were combined into the Connecticut Colony in 1644. The largest group of settlers arrived in the region in 1636. They were Puritans from Massachusetts, led by Thomas Hooker. In 1701 Yale College was established and dominated the colonies intellectual life. Four delegates from Connecticut signed the Declaration of Independence, entering the colony into the American Revolution. In 1788, Connecticut ratified the US Constitution and became the fifth state. The new state’s seaports and textile mills helped it to flourish. During the Industrial Revolution, Connecticut became a center for manufacturing. The state manufactured supplies and weapons for Union forces during the Civil War. The railroad began to cover Connecticut in 1872 and a short time later the first telephone exchange was established in New Haven. Connecticut continued to manufacture weapons and supplies for US troops during World War I and II. Major factories at this time included Colt, Pratt and Whitney and Hamilton Standard. Today, Connecticut has one of the highest number of millionaires in the country but also has one of the largest gaps between the very rich and the very poor. Finance is the top economic sector in the state. Top financial companies include Travelers, Cigna, Aetna, Mass Mutual and GE Capital, among others. Manufacturing remains an important industry in the state as well with plants manufacturing aerospace systems, boats and pharmaceuticals. Tourism also contributes a great deal to Connecticut’s economy. The Foxwoods Resort Casino is one of the largest employers, and most popular attractions, in the state. There are 14 private and 6 public universities in Connecticut. Many prestigious universities call Connecticut home including Yale University, Trinity College and Wesleyan University.
