Jackson is the capital of Mississippi. It is also the most populous city in the state, with a current estimated population of 172,638. The land that is now Jackson was originally the territory of the Choctaw Nation. In 1820 the tribe ceded some of this land to the United States government and many white settlers began moving into the area. The new settlement was named after President Andrew Jackson and made the state capital in 1821. The railroad reached Jackson in 1840 helping to bring economic growth to the city. During the Civil War, Union forces gained control of the city in the Battle of Jackson in 1863. Union forces burned the city before they left. After the war many Jim Crow laws were passed in Jackson and throughout the South to segregate and disenfranchise African-Americans. In the 1920s natural gas fields were discovered in the surrounding areas of Jackson which stimulated economic growth for the city. The oil was of low quality and most of the wells were closed by 1955. Hawkins Field was opened in Jackson during World War II as a flying school and is now used as a public airport. Prominent industries in the city today include manufacturing, food processing and agriculture. The popular film The Help was filmed in Jackson and the city offers a self guided tour of areas that were featured in the film and the novel it was based on. Jackson also has many parks, museums and historic locations that attract many visitors each year.
