Kansas is a state in the Midwest United States. The current estimated population is 2,904,021 and the capital is Topeka. Kansas became part of the US with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Kansas was originally part of the Missouri Territory. The first permanent settlement of white Americans in what is now Kansas was established in 1827 as Fort Leavenworth. The Kansas Territory was established in 1854. The territory was divided over slavery as many of the new settlers battled over whether or not to make slavery legal. The many battles gave Kansas the nickname of “Bleeding Kansas.” Kansas was admitted as the 34th state in 1861. Slavery was not permitted in the new state. Many new settlers came to the state after the Civil War including many freed African-Americans. Racial segregation became common practice in Kansas and many states during this time. The landmark case Brown v. Board of Education was filed in the District Court of Kansas when a local parent sued the Board of Education of Topeka for not allowing his daughter to attend the “white school” that was close to their home. The Supreme Court reviewed the case and handed down the historic decision that separate but equal is inherently unequal. Schools nationwide were ordered to integrate. There is a National Historic Site in Topeka honoring this historic court case. Kansas was a frontier state and experienced a significant “Wild West” era during its early years. Wyatt Earp and Wild Bill Hickok both spent time as lawmen in the state. Cattle were often transported through the state from Texas to the east. Agriculture has long been an important part of the Kansas economy. Major outputs include cattle, wheat, soybeans and corn. Kansas is also one of the top producers of oil in the US.
