Lincoln is the capital of Nebraska. The current estimated population is 268,738. The area was first settled by a representative of the Crescent Salt Company who was visiting the salt flats in hopes of manufacturing the salt. Salt manufacturing never took off in the area but the settlement lasted. The settlement was named Lancaster after Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Lancaster was made the new territorial capital due to the large population of the area south of the Platte River. It was renamed Lincoln after President Abraham Lincoln in 1867 and the city was officially incorporated in 1869. Soon after incorporation the University of Nebraska was established and the railroad reached the city bringing an influx of new settlers. Today the University of Nebraska is one of the largest employers in the city and is home to some of the most popular museums and gardens in Lincoln. Other large employers in the city include the state government and Bryan Health. Lincoln has economic sectors in education, health care, government, railroad, finance and manufacturing. College sports are big in Lincoln and there are 22 teams in NCAA Division I sports.
