Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas. It is also the most populous city, with a current estimated population of 197,357. The area that is now Little Rock was explored by Spanish and French settlers in the 16th and 17th centuries. French explorers established a trading post along the Arkansas River in 1722, naming it Little Rock for the small rock formation in the River. Little Rock became the capital of the Arkansas Territory in 1821 and was incorporated as a city in 1831. Steam ferries on the Arkansas River brought trade and population growth to the city. General Douglas MacArthur was born in Little Rock in 1880. He would go on to lead US troops in the Pacific theater of World War II. His birthplace is now the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History. Today many companies have headquarters in Little Rock including Dillard’s Department Stores, Windstream Communications, Acxiom and the Rose Law Firm. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is one of the largest employers in the city. Little Rock has many museums and performing arts theaters but is perhaps best known as the home of the William J. Clinton Presidential Library.
