Lowell, Massachusetts is one of the most populous cities in the state with an estimated population of 108,522. The city was incorporated in 1826 as a planned textile manufacturing center. It became known as the cradle of the Industrial Revolution, producing more textiles than any other state. In the 20th century the manufacturing industry declined and many factories closed, causing Lowell’s economy to drop significantly. There was a short boost in the economy during WWII as the few remaining mills manufactured parachutes for US troops. However, when the war ended, the last remaining factories closed and remained abandoned for many years. Today many of the old factories have been converted into museums and historic sites including Lowell National Historic Park which highlights Lowell’s history as a manufacturing and immigrant city. There are 39 sites in Lowell that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Boxing is an important part of the city’s culture and Lowell hosts the annual New England Golden Gloves tournament. The city was the setting of the academy award winning film, The Fighter, about Lowell native Micky Ward.
