Massachusetts is a state in the New England region of the United State. The current estimated population is 6,692,824 with a majority of the population residing in the Boston metropolitan area. European colonists first began making contact with the indigenous tribes in the region in the early 17th century. By 1619 about 90% of the indigenous population had been wiped out by smallpox. The Pilgrims were the first settlers in the region. They arrived on the Mayflower in 1620 and established the settlement of Plymouth. After the Pilgrims arrived, the Puritans followed and settled the area that is now known as Boston. In 1691 the settlements were united into the Province of Massachusetts Bay. It was about this time that mass hysteria over witchcraft culminated in the Salem Witch Trials. Massachusetts colonists were among the first to rebel against British rule in events like the Boston Massacre of 1770 and the Boston Tea Party in 1773. The first battles of the American Revolution were fought in Massachusetts and George Washington received his first victory in the Siege of Boston in 1776.
Massachusetts was the sixth state to ratify the constitution in 1788. In the 19th century the state joined the Industrial Revolution with several factories producing textiles, tools and paper. Famous Massachusetts abolitionists Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson made major contributions to American though and philosophy at this time. During the Civil War the state was the first to recruit a black regiment to fight alongside white officers. In the 20th century the industrial economy began to decline and many factories shut down. Today the economy has rebounded and there are 13 Fortune 500 companies in the state including Liberty Mutual Insurance and MassMutual Financial Services. Industry is focused on finance, technology and health care. Tourism is also a big industry in Massachusetts with many visitors coming to Boston, Cape Cod, Salem and Concord. Popular attractions include historic sites, museums and national parks. Massachusetts is also a leader in education. The state is home to the oldest public elementary school, high school and college. Several high ranking universities are in the state including Harvard, MIT, Brandeis University, Boston College, Mount Holyoke and Williams College among many others. Professional sports are popular in the state with five major league teams: Celtics, Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots and the New England Revolution FC.
