Minneapolis is the most populous city in the state of Minnesota. The current estimated population is 400,070. The Dakota Sioux tribe inhabited the land until 1680 when French explorers and fur traders began arriving in the area. When Fort Snelling was built in the area in 1819 many more settlers began building homes on the land. Minneapolis was incorporated as a city in 1867. Factories began opening along the Mississippi River including flour mills, iron works and lumber mills. Hydropower from the Mississippi River and St. Anthony Falls was used to power many of the mills. General Mills was founded in Minneapolis about this time and still has headquarters in the state today. Milling remains an important part of the economy today along with commerce, finance, industry and health care. Five Fortune 500 companies have headquarters in Minneapolis: Target, US Bancorp, Xcel Energy, Ameriprise Financial and Thrivent Financial. Target and the University of Minnesota are the largest employers. The University of Minnesota is a Big Ten school and their athletic teams, the Minnesota Golden Gophers, receive widespread support throughout the state. There are four professional sports teams in Minneapolis: WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx, NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves, MLB’s Minnesota Twins and NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. Popular attractions in Minneapolis include one of the largest modern art museums in the US, Walker Art Center, and many performing arts theaters.

Minneapolis has one of the highest crime rates in the country. The chance of becoming a victim of crime in the city is 1 in 17. The city suffered from organized crime in the early 20th century when corrupt mayor Doc Ames accepted bribes and made deals with underworld figures. Crime families began to form during prohibition and some reports indicate they are still active in the Twin Cities today. Violent crime rates in Minneapolis are more than double the national average. The chance of becoming a victim of violent crime is 1 in 99. Property crime occurs much more frequently than violent crime. The chance of becoming a victim of property crime is 1 in 20. In 2012 there were 12,760 reported cases of theft and 4,782 cases of burglary. Property crimes like these can easily be deterred with the use of surveillance systems.
