Minot is a city in Ward County, North Dakota. It is one of the most populous cities in the state, with a current estimated population of 47,997. Minot was founded in 1886 as the end point of the Great Northern Railway. The new towns population grew rapidly, giving it the nickname of the “Magic City” due to its population that seemed to sprout up magically overnight. Minot was officially incorporated as a city just one year after its founding, in 1887. The new city was named after railroad investor, Henry D. Minot. Other railroad lines reached the city by the end of the 19th century and the population continued to boom. In the 20th century crime became a major issue for Minot and Ward County. The city was reportedly used as a supply hub for Al Capone’s bootleg business during Prohibition. The Minot Air Force Base was built just north of the city in 1956, bringing many new jobs. Today the Air Force base is the city’s largest employer along with Trinity Health and the public school system. Minot is home to Minot State University which is the third largest university in North Dakota.
