In 1803 the land came under US control as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Many American, British and French settlers set up a fur trade in the area but there was no permanent European-American settlement in what is now Montana until 1841. Miners flooded into the area when gold, silver, copper, lead, coal and oil were discovered in 1862. The Montana Territory was organized by the US government in 1864. During this time of white settlement, many battles erupted between the Native American tribes and the new settlers. Many of the local tribes were relocated to reservations. In 1881 the railroad was brought into Montana, despite protests from the Native Americans. With the railroad came many new settlers and in 1889 Montana became the 41st state admitted to the Union. In the early 20th century many farmers began facing difficulties with the dry climate and the droughts of 1917-1921 only made matters worse. Many people left the state during this time. While the farmers were facing hard times, miners were thriving. The outbreak of World War I in 1917 created a boom for lumber and mining that was used for war materials. Despite a short depression in the mid-20th century, lumber and mining have remained significant economic sectors in Montana to this day. The state also has the 3rd highest number of microbreweries in the nation. Tourism is becoming an important economic force for the state as well.
