Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. It is also one of the largest cities in the state, with a current estimated population of 201,332. The town of Montgomery was created from the two towns of New Philadelphia and East Alabama Town in 1819. The city’s economy was driven by the cotton trade and the population expanded rapidly. Montgomery was named the state capital in 1846. At the beginning of the American Civil War in 1861, Montgomery was named the capital of the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy lost the war and slavery was abolished in 1865 but racial tensions remained high throughout the southern states. Many credit Montgomery as being the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement as it was the location where Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In 1965 activists marched from Selma to Montgomery to protest discrimination in voting rights. The march led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Montgomery’s early economy was heavily reliant on agriculture but has since diversified to include sectors in healthcare, business and manufacturing. Recreation in the city includes many public parks and national landmarks dedicated to Montgomery’s role in American History and Civil Rights.
