Norman is a city in Oklahoma. The current estimated population is 118,197 making it one of the most populous cities in the state. The area now known as Norman was part of the Indian Territory in the 19th century and the land where Norman now sits was once assigned to the Creek Nation. The land was ceded back to the United States government after the Civil War. Abner Norman was sent to survey the land. In 1889 the land was open for settlement and the town was named for the original surveyor. The population grew rapidly and in 1890 the University of Oklahoma was established. Norman was officially incorporated in 1891. During World War II, Norman was used as a training center for combat pilots. After the completion of the highway system in the area, Norman developed as a bedroom community as many residents lived in Norman and commuted to Oklahoma City for work. Today many residents still commute out of the city for work although Norman is home to some thriving businesses. The University of Oklahoma is a large employer for the city as is the National Weather Center which is located on the campus. Norman has other economic sectors in health care, technology and manufacturing. The University of Oklahoma operates many cultural attractions in the city including the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History.
