North Charleston is a city in South Carolina. The current estimated population is 104,054 making it the third most populous city in the state. Between the 17th century and the Civil War, the land where North Charleston sits was used primarily for plantations cultivating crops such as rice and indigo. At the end of the Civil War these large scale plantations were divided into smaller farms as plantation owners could not afford such large scale operations without slave labor. In the 20th century the area was used for the development of industry with such companies as the E.P. Burton Lumber Company and the General Asbestos and Rubber Company opening. North Charleston remained unincorporated territory until 1972 when it was officially incorporated with a population of 22,000. The city’s population nearly doubled in the first year as the city annexed several neighboring areas including the Charleston International Airport. North Charleston’s population continued to grow and several shopping centers were built. Retail is a huge industry in North Charleston and the city has the highest amount of retail sales in the state. Boeing opened an assembly center in the city in 2009, becoming North Charleston’s largest employer. The North Charleston Coliseum is one of the largest venues in South Carolina and hosts many concerts and special events throughout the year.
