Oregon is a state in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The current estimated population is 3,970,239. The area was solely inhabited by Native American tribes until Spanish explorers discovered the area in the 16th century. British and French Canadian settlers and explorers began arriving in the area in the 18th century. The Lewis and Clark Expedition made it to the region now known as Oregon in 1805. The first permanent European settlement came when John Jacob Astor established Fort Astoria as an outpost for his Pacific Fur Company in 1811. Control of the region was shared by the British and Americans as this time. Fur trading dominated the region with most of the industry being controlled by Hudson’s Bay Company. When the Oregon Trail was established in the 1830s, many new settlers came to the region and developed towns and villages. The territory came under sole American control in 1846 with the Oregon Treaty. Oregon was admitted as the 33rd state in 1859. When the railroad reached Oregon at the end of the 19th century, the state’s lumber and agricultural markets grew rapidly as well as its population.
