There are 121 state parks as well as many museums, zoos and amusement parks that attract many visitors. Hunting is also a popular pastime in Pennsylvania with an estimated one million licensed hunters in the state. There are 8 major league sports teams in the state all of which are located in either Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. College football is also popular in the state with many locals rooting for the Penn State Nittany Lions and the University of Pittsburgh Panthers.

Crime in Pennsylvania is close to the national average with the crime rate being 19% lower than the national average in 2011. Property crime accounts for about 86% of the crime in the state which is about 21% lower than the national rate. However, the remaining 14% of violent crimes is about 3% higher than average. Pennsylvania is one of the top 15 lowest crime rate states. The chance of becoming a victim of violent crime in the state is 1 in 287 and of property crime is 1 in 46. Much of the state’s crime takes place in the Philadelphia area, although some other areas also experience high crime rates. Many residents in the state can use surveillance systems to protect their property. Surveillance systems are often used on farms to protect against theft and vandalism as well as in shopping centers and offices. Residents can also use surveillance systems in their homes to protect against burglary and theft.
