Rhode Island was the last colony to ratify the constitution, becoming the 13th state in 1790. By the 19th century the state had turned its attention to manufacturing and many cotton mills opened. Today the textile industry remains an important part of Rhode Island’s economy along with healthcare, education and tourism. Two Fortune 500 companies are based in the state: CVS Caremark and Textron. Rhode Island is also home to many prestigious universities including Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Rhode Island. The state has earned a place in pop culture as the setting of the popular cartoon Family Guy and also as the location of Jackie Kennedy and John F. Kennedy’s wedding.
