Rhode Island is a state on the east coast of the United States. It is the smallest sized state and has one of the lowest populations, although it is one of the most densely populated states. The current estimated population is 1,055,173. Rhode Island was one of the original thirteen colonies, having been settled in 1636 by colonists from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1776 the Colony of Rhode Island was one of the first to declare independence from British Rule. Newport, Rhode Island was occupied by British troops in the early months of the Revolution until Franco-American troops forced them out of Rhode Island all together. Rhode Island was the last colony to ratify the constitution, becoming the 13th state in 1790. By the 19th century the state had turned its attention to manufacturing and many cotton mills opened. Today the textile industry remains an important part of Rhode Island’s economy along with healthcare, education and tourism. Two Fortune 500 companies are based in the state: CVS Caremark and Textron. Rhode Island is also home to many prestigious universities including Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Rhode Island. The state has earned a place in pop culture as the setting of the popular cartoon Family Guy and also as the location of Jackie Kennedy and John F. Kennedy’s wedding.
