Shreveport is a city in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. The current estimated population is 199,311. The city was founded in 1836 when the United States Army Corps of Engineers, led by Henry Miller Shreve, cleared the Red River for passage. The city was named for Shreve and incorporated in 1839. The clearing of the river opened the area for trade which became the dominant economic sector. Agricultural crops, including cotton, also became an important part of the city’s economy. By 1914 the Red River had once again become un-navigable and freight traffic was diverted to railroad lines. The river wouldn’t be opened again until 1994. When the river was reopened, riverboat gambling began to attract many new residents and visitors to the city. Health care is also a dominant industry in Shreveport with some of the largest employers being University Health and Willis-Knighton Health System. In addition to riverboat gambling, visitors are also attracted to the city’s museums and festivals.
