South Bend is a city along the St. Joseph River in Indiana. It is one of the largest cities in the state, with a current estimated population of 100,886. Traders from the American Fur Company began settling in the area in the early 19th century and established South Bend as a trading post. South Bend was incorporated as a town in 1835 as the manufacturing industry began to grow. Henry Studebaker established a wagon shop in South Bend and quickly became the world’s largest wagon builder and later an automobile manufacturer. In 1842 the University of Notre Dame was founded just north of the city limits in the unincorporated area of Notre Dame, Indiana. The university became a major component of South Bend’s economy. South Bend was incorporated as a city in 1865. While the manufacturing industry in South Bend declined, the University has remained an important component of the city’s economy. Other top employers in the city include Memorial Health System, AM General and the community school system. South Bend honors its heritage as the home of the Studebaker automobile with the Studebaker National Museum.
