South Dakota is a state in the Midwest United States. The current estimated population is 853,175 which makes it one of the least populous states. The area was populated solely by the Arikara Native American tribes until French fur traders began to explore the area in the mid-18th century. The land was claimed as part of the French, and later Spanish, Louisiana territory in 1743. During this time of early European settlement, the Sioux tribe gained dominance over the Arikara tribe as the largest Native American tribe in the region. In 1803 the land became a US territory with the Louisiana Purchase. The first permanent American settlement was established in 1817 at Fort Pierre. The Dakota Territory was organized in 1861 and included what is today North Dakota, South Dakota and parts of Montana and Wyoming. Gold was discovered in the Black Hills region in 1874 and miners flocked to the area. This land was part of the Great Sioux Reservation and when the tribe attempted to block miners and white settlers from entering their land, the US government dissolved the Great Sioux Reservation into 5 smaller reservations scattered throughout the area. South Dakota was officially admitted to the Union in 1889 as the 40th state. Just one year later, in 1890, the Wounded Knee Massacre occurred at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This was one of the last major armed conflicts between the US government and Native American tribes and several Sioux Indians lost their lives. Agriculture was the dominant economic force in South Dakota until the 1930s when extremely dry conditions culminated in the Dust Bowl, decimating several farms across the state. The economy began to rebound after the onset of World War II. Agriculture still plays an important role in the economy today along with tourism, health care and finance. The Ellsworth Air Force Base is the second largest employer in the state. The largest agricultural outputs include corn, wheat and hogs. South Dakota is one of the top producers of ethanol in the country. Mount Rushmore is one of the state’s most iconic tourist destinations and draws thousands of visitors every year as does the Deadwood Historic District and the many state and national parks.
