Tacoma is a city in Pierce County, Washington. The city sits along the south end of the Puget Sound and has a current estimated population of 203,446. The area was dominated by the Native American Puyallup tribe until 1852 when a Swedish settler opened a sawmill in the area. The sawmill was abandoned during the Indian War of 1855 until pioneers bought the land in hopes of profiting from the railroad terminus. The land was selected as the terminus point of the Northern Pacific Railroad and Tacoma was incorporated as a city in 1875. In 1911 candy company Mars, Inc. was founded in the city and in the 1930s paper manufacturing became a major industry in Tacoma. Today military, schools and health care are the largest employers in Tacoma. Recreation in the city includes the Point Defiance Park which has many historic buildings, a beach and a zoo and aquarium.

Crime rates in Tacoma are high. The chance of becoming a victim of crime in the city is 1 in 14. Both violent and property crime rates are twice as high as the national average. Like many cities in Washington, property crime is a big issue. The chance of becoming a victim of property crime is 1 in 16. In 2012 there were 7,995 reported cases of theft and 2,965 cases of burglary. Crimes like these can be deterred by installing surveillance systems in homes and businesses. Properties with surveillance systems are known to experience less crime than those without. Tacoma residents can help lower property crime rates and make their city safer by protecting their property with surveillance systems.
