Vancouver is a city in the state of Washington. It lies along the Columbia River on the border of Oregon. The current estimated population is 167,405 making it one of the largest cities in the state. The first European settlers came to the area in 1775 and European diseases such as smallpox wiped out most of the native population. Permanent settlement of the area did not occur until 1824 when a fur trading post was established by the Hudson’s Bay Company. The area was controlled by both the United States and Great Britain until 1846 when the land was ceded to the US. The city of Vancouver was incorporated in 1857. The Vancouver Barracks became the largest Army base in the state in the early 20th century and there was a strong military presence in the city. During World War II shipyards were opened in the area and an influx of workers came to the city. Today the largest employers in Vancouver are in the health care, education and railroad industries. In the early part of the 21st century efforts began to revitalize the arts scene in Vancouver. Today there is a designated Arts District downtown and the Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival is popular event amongst residents.
