Georgia is a state in the southeast United States. It was established in 1732 as the last of the original 13 colonies. Georgia was the fourth state to ratify the US Constitution in 1788. The current estimated population is 9,992,167 and is one of the 10 most populous states in the country. The capital and most populous city is Atlanta. Gold was discovered in the North Georgia Mountains in 1829, bringing many white settlers to the area and driving out the Cherokee population that once resided there. In 1861 Georgia declared its secession from the Union and became a major battleground in the Civil War. Large amounts of land between Atlanta and Savannah were destroyed by General Sherman and his troops. After the confederacy lost the war, Georgia was restored to the union in 1870. The state has long been a battleground for race relations in the US and was the center of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. The final resting place of Martin Luther King Jr. is in Atlanta as well as the Ebenezer Baptist Chruch where he preached. The Georgia economy is diverse with 15 Fortune 500 companies, widespread farms producing peanuts, corn and soybeans, a large textile industry and one of the largest military presences in the country. The Georgia film and television industry also contributes to the economy with many popular shows being filmed in the state including The Vampire Diaries, House of Payne and The Walking Dead. Tourist attractions in the state include World of Coke, Stone Mountain and The Georgia Aquarium which is said to be the largest aquarium in the world. Many of the seaside towns and islands off the coast attract tourists to their beaches and golf courses. The Savannah Historic District along the Atlantic Coast of Georgia attracts a reported 11 million tourists each year. There are many historic locations throughout Georgia including the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in Plains, Georgia.

Crime rates in Georgia are about average. The chance of becoming a victim of violent crime in Georgia is 1 in 264 which is about the same as the national average. The rate of property crime is a bit higher than the national average with chances being 1 in 29. Three cities in Georgia are on the list of most dangerous cities in the country, Albany, East Point and Atlanta. There were also three Georgia cities on the list of safest cities in the country, Peachtree City, Johns Creek and Milton. In 2008 there were 387,009 property crimes reported in the state.
