Indiana became the 19th state admitted to the Union in 1816. During the Civil War troops from Indiana joined Union forces and the Battle of Corydon was fought in Indiana in 1863. After the war, Indiana became a manufacturing state with a strong auto industry. Steel and pharmaceutical also became strong industries in the 20th century. Today manufacturing remains a leading industry in Indiana and the state produces large amounts of steel, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, rubber and coal. Top companies in the state include WellPoint, Eli Lilly and Steel Dynamics. There are many high ranking universities in the state including the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University, Purdue University, Valparaiso University and Butler University. Auto racing is a huge part of Indiana culture and the famous Indianapolis 500 takes place in the capital city every year. The race attracts over 250,000 people and is one of the most famous attractions in Indiana.
