West Jordan is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah. It is one of the most populous suburbs of Salt Lake City, with a current estimated population of 108,383. The area was first settled by Mormons in 1847. The settlers considered the area to be their Zion and named the nearby river the Jordan River after the River Jordan in Israel. The settlement was then named after the river. Sawmills were built in the area beginning in 1850. The mills along with agriculture and mining were the dominant industries in the early years of the settlement. West Jordan was officially incorporated as a city in 1941.
